Dulce de Leche Sufganiot

Here is a delightful Hispanic twist on one of the traditional Chanukkah treats – from Mexico via Chicago. Enjoy, Beautiful People!

I’ve never really appreciated Hanukkah food. It’s too fried, too jelly-filled, too… I don’t know, I just never appreciated it. Today, however, with all the  donut excitement there is in the world, I decided I had to make a jewish donut that was worth it. I’d never fried dough before and I thought it’d be messy and bad, and I only had very little oil (remind you of something?) I didn’t think about it before, but I was able to fry ALL my donuts in very little oil. Yes children, this was a Hanukkah miracle! The one thing I really hated about sufganiot (or as they call them here, jelly donuts) was the jelly part. I hate everything containing jelly. But hey, a filled donut has a thousand possibilities, and what better than dulce de leche to fill a hole?

Where did you find dulce de leche in Chicago?- you might…

Thank you for sharing this post.

I love dulce de leche and have made my own as well but my favourite way to use it is as a filling for shortbreads. (I’ll spare you the link to my blog.)

    Jelly-filled donuts = LUV

Though, if not for a jelly-filled donut, Boston creams filled with pastry cream and chocolate glazed are a tie. 🙂

    1. I used to love dulce de leche; it’s one of the things I miss (another one is flan).
Jelly-filled donuts coming up, in a couple of days!

Love flan though these days I make panna cotta more often. Looking forward to the jelly donuts.

      2. Both are dairy, unfortunately. Flan is very much a South Florida thing, together with Mojito and Cuba Libre.

Cuba Libre … shades of high school and drinking rum and coke cause it make us feel like grown ups. 🙂

Is it like a churros? Lately the craze in lil red dot is eating churros filled with all sorts of sweet goeey fillings! Argh! Bad for dieters but really yummy I guess 😉

    1. Churros are made from a different kind of dough, but are just as delicious! 😻

Churros are made with the same choux pastry as used for cream puffs and gougeres (cheese puffs). Besides rolling them in cinnamon sugar, I like dipping churros in hot chocolate or chocolate sauce. I haven’t made them in ages because I rarely deep fry, but it’s not too difficult. I have a churro recipe on my old livejournal account.

I know you’re not into dairy but the mention of donuts reminded me that there’s a type of Romanian donut made with dry curd cottage cheese called ‘papanasi’. Delicious. 🙂

I’ve been cooking and posting for about 5 yrs starting with my glorified food diary on LiveJournal (the first 2 without a camera) and only started blogging a couple of years ago. I have added pictures to the original posts on repetition when I could. I some cases the picture links expired … I’m always happy to re-upload if anyone wants to know what something looked like.

Dulce de leche is one of my all time favorites, but I rarely bake with it. I just don’t have enough experience or recipes that call for it. Maybe now I can start working on that problem! thanks for sharing this 🙂
