When I was in college, every time I walked into a room, someone would jump to a piano or grab a violin and start playing this song.
My name was the joke of the entire student body, but I still loved the beautiful film and the incredible rendition by Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong – the two greats! Little did I know that there was actually a dessert called Hello Dolly. Apparently, the eponymous Broadway show was immensely popular in the sixties, and an eleven-year old Alecia Leigh Coach from Dallas, Texas, borrowed her grandmother’s cake recipe, tweaked it a little, gave it a jazzy name, and sent it to the first American food columnist, Clementine Paddleford, who featured it in “the Week” magazine in 1965 (http://cabingoddess.com). Here is a delicious healthy twist on this musical treat that bears my name, developed by lovely Stella.

Very tasty dessert bar. friend in high school exposed me to ‘Hello Dollys’ as I’d never heard of them before (being Romanian). She shared her recipe and I’ve made it since. I know what it’s like to get tired of having people break into songs with your name in them. There are several (4 or 5) with my REAL name in them. 🙂

Considering that jazz was barely legal in communist Russia, Louis Armstrong was practically idolized, and every foreign film was a great event, I wasn’t even annoyed. Also, most of my college mates were quite talented (otherwise they wouldn’t be there!), and their variations on a theme were always fun.
I am looking forward to making this dessert when we finally get our power restored and come home.

A delicious treat, a fantastic song and two great women: you and Babs! I think it was in The Mirror Has Two Faces, one of my favorite film scenes Barbara is out to dinner and says she likes creating “the perfect bite” by dipping her fork into each item on her plate. Ever since seeing that scene I try to do that when I each. Those desert Dollies look like the perfect bite!

Loved the clip – but I’m still looking for one from the original B’way show – my parents saw it and raved about “the waiter’s dance” – which included some mighty fancy tray flipping. I’d love to see it.
As for songs – “Paddlin’ Madelin’ Home” was the one I had to hear ad nauseum — even after Jacques Brel’s “Waiting for Madeleine” (which is certainly more apt lol).

Excellent post young lady, I enjoyed it. I have always liked Mr. Armstrong but not so much Ms. Barbra, to me the song would have been better if she had not been singing in it, but that is just my opinion.
